Halal Inspection Update 2015

Inspection was carried out on 15 April 2015. Please see summary below.

Summary

Main refectory

1. Meat in all wet dishes is Halal except for pork.

2. Cold meats and small goods are not Halal certified (includes meat in sandwiches).

3. Steak and beef that are used in the burgers are grilled separately. Therefore they have been prepared in an acceptable way.

4. The frying process is under investigation as it is not clear which fryers are being used for which items. Frying process has been clarified:

  • Halal items: french fries, chicken chippies, potato wedges, potato gems (see update below), calamari, fish, seafood.

  • Non-halal items: dim sims, sausages, small-goods.

4A. IMPORTANT UPDATE: We were informed by one of the UQ Union Staff members that the potato gems are not halal as they contain pig gelatine. We emailed the UQ Union on 7/9/2015 for verification but have since not received any response at the time of this update. If you intend to eat any fried items, please verify with senior refec staff to make sure that cross-contamination has not occurred.

4B. FOLLOW-UP UPDATE: UQ Union responded on 14/10/2015 confirming that NO porcine gelatine was present in the potato gems.  We have come to the conclusion that based on the information provided by the Union, the potato gems are Halal.
